American Society of Interior Designers Aging in Place Council

by Louis on September 20, 2007

I am proud to be serving a second year on the ASID Aging in Place Council. Interior Designers are well aware of Aging in Place issues, Universal Design and the market. Through this council ASID is preparing educational materials so designers can be more responsive and responsible with all their clients.

My articles along with those of fellow council members and lots of other information are behind the ASID website button Design for an Aging Population. Good stuff with a great point of view from dedicated, passionate folks. Check it out.

I saw this movie about a week ago and had a similar response. Christ’s character’s high functioning level combined with her intellegence and foresight came together to present a path that is not seen often to date. However, it may be one we see more of in the future. The only thing truly predictable about the boomers is that we are NOT as predictable as previous generations.

It was also thought provoking in other ways. There was one thinly veiled suggestion that Christi’s character was “faking” the severity of her dementia issues in order to protect her husband. Her condition also diminished seriously when the focus of her caregiving was taken away from her. These characteristics, although serving diametrically opposed purposes, were completely consistent with her movie character.

I am currently teaching a course in universal design, and have made this movie (as well as this blog) required viewing/reading and a point of departure for classroom discussion.

Thanks for the “heads-up”, Louis.
